CHRISTIAN SCIENCE . . . WHAT IS IT?
Mary Baker Eddy had a deep love for the Bible and studied it diligently her entire life. In 1866, she had a life changing experience when she sustained severe injuries after falling on an icy sidewalk. After being carried to her house she asked for her Bible. Upon reading an account of Jesus healing a man quickly and completely, a new view of God as the only reality of her life flooded her thought, and she rose up on her feet, well. Thus, her search for a practical spiritual solution to human suffering began. Gaining an understanding of how Christ Jesus healed, Mrs. Eddy began to heal others through spiritual means alone. Her goal was to share this discovery, which she named Christian Science, with mankind. Christian Science teaches how to heal as Jesus healed.
Christian Science is a Christian religion and uses the inspired word of the Bible and the textbook of Christian Science as the basis for prayer – a spiritual approach which inspires a deeper understanding of God’s divine Love for each of us and our relationship to Him as a beloved child. Christian Science is sometimes mistakenly confused with Scientology, faith healing, positive thinking, self-hypnosis, and New Age practices. It is none of these.
